I have already decided that St. Louis will be my favorite XFL team. After the Rams were unjustly ripped from St. Louis, I felt bad for the city and the fans. I was never a St. Louis Rams fan, but it still wasn't right. I do need an XFL team to root for, though, and the closest team to me is St. Louis, so why not? This got me thinking, though, about what their team name should be. The XFL announced that they would have team names, logos and colors announced by the first quarter. So, I bring you the Name Game II.
St. Louis Rivermen: This is a bit obvious, but St. Louis is on the banks of the Mississippi River and the Missouri River runs north of the city. The river has been a strong influence on the culture of the area, so the Rivermen makes sense. I don't really need to go way into depth with this one.
St. Louis Blue Jays: Doesn't make sense? Let me help you. A very popular and successful MLB team is in St. Louis with the team name of the Cardinals. People from St. Louis love and idolize the cardinals. So, a way to keep the bird thing going without ripping them off, is to go to the opposite color of red and go blue. What is a famous blue bird? A Blue Jay. It has a good ring to it.
St. Louis Kings: In its early creation, the city of St. Louis was named after King Louis IX. It would pay homage to the city's namesake. Hopefully a cowbell craze doesn't start like in Sacramento, though. I wouldn't mind, but others might. The Kings would also have the rest of the XFL kneeling down to them when they win the inaugural XFL championship, so it's fitting.
St. Louis Brewers: It is not original; the Milwaukee Brewers have them beat in that department. But if you have ever been to St. Louis, you know that Anheuser Busch is a huge part of this town. It is almost the heart and soul in many ways. This would be the ultimate respect. The name, however, just isn't super original.
St. Louis Mighty: A nickname for the Mississippi River is the Mighty Mississippi, so they could name themselves the Mighty. It brings a bold name to what will be a great league.
St. Louis Explorers: This is more of a call back to Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery Expedition and the Louisiana Purchase. Lewis and Clark helped grow the city of St. Louis, and this could be a good way to say thanks.
St. Louis Browns: This is a throwback to a very historical MLB franchise from before the Cardinals. This one might be my favorite, though I am a little biased. My favorite NFL team is the Cleveland Browns, so I would definitely jump at the chance of cheering for another Browns team.
St. Louis Hellfire: This seems more of an XFL team name. If you go back and look at the original XFL team names, you would understand why. It has a bold name. It could strike fear into other teams. Plus, you could have really cool pyrotechnics shows at all the games.
Now I expect none of these names will even be thought about. The first XFL had some pretty unique names to match the League, names like the Rage, Maniax, X-treme, Demons, etc. I would suppose that the XFL would follow their previous train of thought heading into this newly rejuvenated XFL. Or, maybe because it is all new and supposed to be different from the original XFL, t
hey will follow this train of thought. Who knows? We will have to wait and see in the first quarter.
