Josh Johnson, who some may know as one of the most journeyed quarterbacks in the NFL, has found two new homes for this season and next year. "What?" you may be asking yourself; that's correct, Josh Johnson has been named the starting quarterback for Washington for the rest of the NFL season. Due to injuries to Alex Smith and Colt McCoy, he is relieving Mark Sanchez who had a horrible performance this past Sunday. Earlier this year, though, Johnson was the No. 1 overall pick in the AAF (Alliance of American Football) quarterback draft by the San Diego Fleet. In an earlier blog, I made the comment about how I hope to see some crossing over from the NFL to the two new start up leagues (AAF and XFL) in the coming years.
Josh Johnson has played for 12 different NFL teams; he even played exactly one snap with my favorite NFL team the Cleveland Browns. Even though he has played for twelve different teams, he has played for some of those teams more than once. All together, Johnson has had 10 years of NFL experience. There has been some buzz around the football community because, as I said earlier, Johnson was drafted No. 1 overall in the AAF draft to the San Diego Fleet. He played for the University of San Diego during his college years, so it is a homecoming of sorts. Then this week, as a safety precaution, Washington signed the journeyman quarterback to back up Mark Sanchez.
Late in that game, however, after Sanchez went 6 of 14 for 38 yards with 2 INTs, Washington head coach Jay Gruden promoted Josh Johnson to starter. Johnson would go on to go 11 of 16 for 195 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. Washington went on to lose that game 40-16 (to the Giants) making this Washington's fourth loss in a row. This was Johnson's first NFL game appearance since 2013. Gruden would then announce that Johnson would be named the starter for next week's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. On a funnier note, Johnson said that he learned his new teammates' names by playing Madden, due to him being signed at the last minute.
Now I don't know about you, but this whole situation is awesome. This is not because I like Washington; I don't like their team at all. This is awesome for one reason, and that reason is Josh Johnson. Can you imagine Johnson taking over the starting position for Washington, winning out and somehow getting Washington into the playoffs? Oh my gosh, it would cause a riot! Here is the real kicker: he has said that not matter what, he still plans on playing in the AAF's inaugural season, which will take place just a couple weeks after the Super Bowl. Again, can you imagine Washington somehow squeaking into the playoffs and winning the Super Bowl? Then Josh Johnson bouncing Washington (presumably as Super Bowl MVP) and playing for the San Diego Fleet and winning them the first AAF Championship? This has the makings of a great story.
