Chiefs Do It Again

The Kansas City Chiefs do it again; they choke in the playoffs and are sent home to watch the Super Bowl. I mean, if you are a Chiefs fan, you had to see this coming. They do it every time they make the playoffs. Andy Reid especially does it every time he makes the playoffs. So it was inevitable that the Kansas City Chiefs would again lose again in the playoffs. Though this time around, I think the Chiefs can learn from this.

Yesterday, I saw a headline that said Patrick Mahomes could get an extension worth 200 million dollars. As dynamic a player as he is, and as great of a leader he has shown he can be for this team, any Kansas City Chiefs fan who thinks signing a young (or any) QB to a 200 million dollar extension is dumb. You can’t work around that unless everyone else takes very significant pay cuts, which in today’s NFL doesn’t seem likely. Not to mention, Kansas City isn’t exactly a hotbed for free agency. If Patrick Mahomes actually wants to have a legacy outside of being a great individual player and at all cares about the Kansas City Chiefs organization, he will do what Tom Brady does and sign short term deals that are worth around 14-18 million dollars with a nice signing bonus; that way, the Kansas City Chiefs can work around that, bring in talent, retain the talent that they already have and build upon it. This isn’t the same Kansas City team that gets beat in the playoffs every year they make it; they could actually have a very successful dynasty with Patrick Mahomes that will include Super Bowls going forward, but if they give him that 200 million dollar extension, or Patrick Mahomes accepts it, it is all but over for the Chiefs.

The Chiefs can do one of two things following yesterday's loss. They can either learn and take notes, or they can be stupid. If I were the Chiefs, I would learn. If Patrick Mahomes accepts the 200 million dollar extension, good for him. I'm not saying he doesn’t deserve a huge extension, but if he does it will definitely set the franchise back and they won’t win a Super Bowl under that extension. Patrick, learn from the man that beat you last night and create a legacy bigger than yourself.
